Fruit Flies It’s been some time since I started to see fruit flies in our apartment. I wasn't sure where they came from. I checked everywhere and realized that it was my pot of Monstera that housed those small flies. What was bad was that the Monstera pot was in my bedroom and the flies always bothered me while I enjoyed my nightly reading time, which is supposed to be relaxing. I googled the solution and found out that all I had to do was to change two centimeters deep of the surface soil to some sort of artificial soil. After I changed the surface soil, it seemed that the flies disappeared for a while, but they did come back. I found out was that the flies were coming out from the bottom of the planter, not only from the surface of the soil. I couldn't possibly change the soil in the bottom of the planter without damaging the Monstera itself. The next thing I did was that whenever I see the fruit flies flying around the plant, I spray some insecticide, the one usually used for mosquitoes, around the planter. That surely killed the flying ones, but in a few days, they appeared again, which meant their eggs remained intact. It was so stressful seeing the fruit flies flying all over the apartment and knowing that everything I had done was fruitless. To solve this problem once and for all, I threw away the Monstera with the soil and the flies' eggs or whatever in it. That was three days ago. I just hope that my Umbellata, Pothos, and Pachira won't be inhabited by the flies, which I still spot occasionally.
